On December 7, 1941 the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation held a ceremony to introduce its latest design, the XTBF-1. The XTBF was a torpedo bomber designed for the US Navy. Ironically, on the same day, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor thrusting the United States into World War II. As a result of Japan's sneak attack, the new XTBF-1 became know as the Avenger.
